British Museum, London to receive six important works by Burhan Dogançay

Istanbul, 11 November 2009 – After prominent works by Burhan Dogançay have recently been included in the collections of such important Museums as Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (D), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (D), Pinakothek der Moderne Munich (D), Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (D), Moderna Museet Stockholm (SE), Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Vienna (A),
Museum der Moderne Salzburg (A), Kunstmuseum Bern (CH), Museum Bellerive (CH) and Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH), now also the British Museum London (UK) is enriching its collection with works by Burhan Dogançay.

First to mention is the brilliantly executed Lofty Ribbons, an early and expressive example of Burhan Dogançay’s iconic Ribbons Series (cf. picture above). Burhan Dogançay’s ability to create an individual image that is in keeping with both international aesthetics and traditional art forms on his native Turkey reveals a modern awareness coupled with personal integrity that has, especially in the Ribbons Series, resulted in a
powerful and beautiful synthesis. For many years, this work has been in the collection of a Vienna and New York based patron of the arts who in late 2009, by the medium of Dr. Venetia Porter, decided to donate it to the British Museum.

Dr. Venetia Porter is a curator and responsible for the collection of Islamic art at the British Museum, in particular of the Arab World and Turkey as well as the collection of the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East. She was previously curator of Islamic coins in the Department of Coins and Medals. She studied Arabic and Islamic art at Oxford University and obtained her doctorate on the medieval history and architecture
of the Yemen from the University of Durham. In 2006, she published the catalogue of the exhibition at the British Museum “Word into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East”.

Together with Lofty Ribbons, the following five works on paper from the Cone, General Urban Walls, Hearts, Grego Series and Blue Walls of New York (from up left clockwise) will pass to the British Museum.
